Who we are:

100% Volunteer Run

The Horseheads Historical Society maintains regular museum hours and hosts scheduled tours at the Depot Museum April-December, allowing visitors to view our curated collection of Horseheads' history.

The Society are the caretakers of the Zimmerman House at 601 Pine St. in Horseheads, NY and its collection of art and artifacts from the cartoonist, Eugene "Zim" Zimmerman and his daughter Laura. Tours are available by appointment.

Throughout the year the Society hosts events to educate our community and schools about local history. We have a good time doing so! This includes things like the Zim Picnic in May, and the Ghost Walk in September.
Groups are welcome, and private tours for groups may be arranged by leaving a message at the Depot. Space is available for bus parking, several excellent local restaurants and the downtown shops are within walking distance for those wishing to spend the day. The Depot Museum is handicap accessible. Visitation and tours are free, donations are gladly accepted.

The board meet the second Thursday of the month at 6 pm at the Museum, keeping tabs on our activities, facilities, archives, committees and budget. This meeting is open to the public.

Social Media Policies

The Horseheads Historical Society is active on Facebook. We welcome all individuals to participate in discussions about the history of Horseheads and the surrounding areas. We ask that individuals be courteous, helpful, and generous in sharing their knowledge of community history with others. Because Facebook is an open forum, we cannot vouch for the reliability and accuracy of the content that is posted.

We ask that users:

  • provide citations or sourcing for any content that is not your own.
  • stay on topic.
  • talk about local current and historical events, but in a respectful way that is mindful of the fact that others may not share your same viewpoints.
  • remember that comments on posts do not reflect the viewpoint of the Historical Society. Moderator viewpoints in posts are their own.

We encourage open and honest discussion, however our Facebook moderators may hide or remove posts that do not fit with our guidelines for civil discourse or behavior. We welcome reasonable criticism, but may delete negative or derogatory comments about individuals, information that is inaccurate, or content that is not pertinent to the mission of our organization.

We do our best to respond to all comments in a timely fashion, but as we're all volunteers we do ask you to be patient. We're doing our best. We are not able to perform individual or personal family research, but we would be happy to help you arrange a visit to the archives.

Volunteers and Members

The Museum and events are staffed entirely by a team of dedicated volunteers, without whom the Horseheads Historical Society could not function. We are also supported by our membership of Horseheads' history lovers from all over the world. We deeply appreciate all the time, effort and support of our volunteers and members.

We can always use volunteers. The more help we have, the more we can accomplish for our community. Horseheads Historical Society volunteer activities range from weekly staffing of the museum to once a year help with an event that is special to them. We are always seeking community-minded people with a love of history to join us in maintaining and sharing our town's heritage. Whether it be the role of board member, a volunteer, or simply holding a membership to show your support, we invite you to come and see what we are all about.

Volunteer opportunities are open to everyone of any age, ability, and level of commitment. The society welcomes people of all backgrounds to be involved, and we are committed to valuing diversity and practicing inclusion.
